Hoa Binh & Mai Chau · Northern Vietnam

Sleep on a floating house in the middle of Vietnam’s inland sea.

Two hours west of Hanoi, the Da River widens into Hoa Binh Lake: a hundred kilometres of jade water, limestone islands and Muong villages, often called the inland Halong Bay. You spend one night on a private floating house moored off the shore, a day trekking to a hidden cave and the jade Dragon Eye Lake, and a second night at a hideaway resort across the water.

The signature journey

A floating house, a mountain trek and a lake the colour of jade.

No crowds, no tour buses. Just the quiet of northern Vietnam: a night on the water at Hoa Binh, a day trekking to a hidden cave and the famous Dragon Eye Lake, and a second night at a lakeside hideaway in Mai Chau. Three days, two very different lakes, one easy loop from Hanoi.

The inland Halong Bay

Behind Hoa Binh, a hundred kilometres of jade water.

Hoa Binh Lake is an enormous reservoir on the Da (Black) River, held back by one of Vietnam’s largest hydropower dams. The rising water left a maze of limestone islands, drowned valleys and quiet bays, ringed by the stilt-house villages of the Muong people. Travellers who know it call it the inland Halong Bay.

Hardly any foreign visitors make it out here. The water is calm enough to paddle at dawn, clean enough to swim, and deep green against the karst. For one night your floating house sits right on it, far from any road.

A private floating house moored on the calm green water of Hoa Binh Lake, mountains behind. Limestone islands scattered across the turquoise water of Hoa Binh Lake under a blue sky. The emerald water of the Dragon Eye Lake ringed by limestone cliffs and forest.

Three days off the map

Everything you’ll do at Hoa Binh.

Two hours from Hanoi

A morning drive west out of the Old Quarter and into the hills: river valleys, rice terraces and the great Hoa Binh dam, then down to the water’s edge.

Board your floating house

A short boat ride takes you to a private floating house moored in a quiet bay. A room of your own, a deck on the water, and the whole lake for a front garden.

Play on the water

The afternoon is yours: paddleboard, swim, or try water biking, e-foiling and jet boarding straight off the deck (optional). Or just lie back and watch the karst.

Trek to the Muong villages

A guided hike from Ngoi Hoa Bay past traditional stilt houses and into the forest, with protective gear and an English-speaking guide the whole way.

Long Coc Cave & Dragon Eye Lake

Reach a hidden cave full of pearl-like rock formations, climb to the Stone Tree viewpoint over the jade Dragon Eye Lake, then cool off with a swim in its emerald water.

Unwind at Mai Chau

A boat carries you to the Mai Chau Hideaway, a lakeside resort for your second night: an infinity pool over the water, a quiet morning, and a gentle ride back to Hanoi.

Day by day

How the journey unfolds.

  1. 1

    Day 1

    Hanoi to the floating house

Leave Hanoi’s Old Quarter after breakfast and drive west into the hills of Hoa Binh, past river valleys and the vast hydropower dam on the Da River. By early afternoon you reach the lake and board a boat out to your floating house, moored in a calm, quiet bay. The rest of the day is yours: settle in, swim off the deck, or try the water toys, paddleboard, water bike, e-foil or jet board, before a quiet night on the water.

    • Hanoi → Hoa Binh by private car/van
    • Floating house: private room, shared bathroom
    • Optional water sports off the deck

    Day 2

Trek, cave and the Dragon Eye Lake

After breakfast, a boat and a short drive bring you to Ngoi Hoa Bay, where you gear up and set off on foot. The trail winds past Muong stilt houses and into the forest to Long Coc Cave, a cathedral of stalactites shaped over millions of years. Lunch is served at the cave mouth with the lake below, then you climb to the Stone Tree viewpoint above the jade Dragon Eye Lake and descend to swim in its cool, clear water. By evening a boat carries you across to the Mai Chau Hideaway for the night.

Good to know

Come prepared for the real thing.

  • Swimsuit and a quick-dry towel: you’ll be in the lake on day two
  • Proper shoes for a half-day forest trek, plus light layers
  • A dry bag for phones and cameras on the boats and in the water
  • Any medication you need: the floating house is comfortable but remote

Who it’s for

Built for couples, families and small groups who’d rather swim, trek and sleep on the water than tick off city sights. There’s one proper half-day hike, so a basic level of fitness helps, and you should be comfortable in and around the lake. If that’s you, you’ll love it.

Before you ask

Good questions, honest answers.

Anything we haven’t covered? Ask in the booking form. A real human from the Go Beyond team replies within 48 hours.

What is the floating house actually like?

It’s a private room on a floating house moored off the shore of Hoa Binh Lake, not a tent. You get your own bedroom with big windows over the water and a shared bathroom, plus a deck for swimming and watching the lake. It’s comfortable but genuinely remote: power and hot water are simpler than a city hotel, which is rather the point.

And the second night, in Mai Chau?

Night two is at the Mai Chau Hideaway Lake Resort, a quiet lakeside place with wooden rooms, balconies and an infinity pool over the water. You stay in a standard room. It’s the comfortable counterpoint to the night on the floating house.

How hard is the trek on day two?

It’s a half-day guided walk, not a mountaineering expedition: forest trails to Long Coc Cave, the Stone Tree viewpoint and the Dragon Eye Lake, with protective gear and a guide throughout. A basic level of fitness and decent shoes are all you need. Tell us if anyone in your group would rather take it easy and we’ll adapt.

How do we get there from Hanoi?

A private car or van picks you up in Hanoi and drives west to Hoa Binh, around two hours. From the pier a boat takes you out to the floating house. On day three a shared vehicle brings you back from Mai Chau to Hanoi, roughly two and a half hours, with a hotel drop-off.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes, families are welcome. The days are about boats, swimming and an easy trek rather than hard hiking. As you’re on open water and walking forest trails, children need to be confident swimmers and supervised throughout. Tell us their ages and we’ll make sure the plan suits your family.

When can we go, and how do we book?

This runs as a private departure on the dates that suit you, year-round subject to weather and water levels. Send your preferred dates and group size with the form below. There’s no payment at this stage: we reply within 48 hours with availability and a quote.
